Registration Renewal
Please read this before renewing your registration.
This form allows you to renew your Massachusetts registration. To process this transaction, you will need your RMV-2 renewal card, which should be marked Ins Stamp Not Needed. Your vehicle must be insured to renew your registration.
Renewing your Trailer Plate: Please read the directions on your RMV-2 Renewal Card BEFORE attempting to renew your trailer registration online. If your trailer weighs less than 2001 pounds and it is listed under either a personal name or listed under a company name, you may renew on the Internet. If your trailer is listed under a personal name and weighs between 2001-3000 pounds, you may renew on the Internet.
All other trailers must be renewed by mail or at any full service RMV office .
Renewing a Commercial Registration: If your commercially registered vehicle weighs more than 55,000 lbs., you cannot renew through the Internet or by telephone even if your renewal card is stamped "Ins. Stamp Not Needed." You will need to renew your registration by mail or in person. Please keep in mind that with either renewal method, you will need to show your IRS Form 2290. If you mail in your renewal, a photocopy of the IRS Form 2290 will be acceptable.
Renewing an Expired Passenger (PAN) Registration: If your registration has already expired (within the past year), your renewal fee will be prorated. Refer to this prorated fee chart for your fee (the fee chart opens in a new browser window) .
Converting to Special Plates: If you have regular passenger plates but want special plates for your vehicle, DO NOT renew your passenger registration first. Instead, go to the Special Plate Order Form on our site and complete that transaction. Completing a special plate order will give you a new expiration date and you will not need to renew your current passenger registration. You may obtain special plates if your current registration expires in the current month and today's date is less than the 15th. Your special plates, registration and decal will be mailed to you within ten business days. If you require assistance, please contact the RMV Telephone Center.
Renewing a No-Fee Registration: If you have a registration that does not require a renewal fee (i.e. Purple Heart, Ex POW, etc.,) you will not be able to renew online. Please contact our Telephone Center and a representative will assist you.
Changing Information on Your Registration: If you need to change any information on your registration (i.e., name or address change), please contact our Telephone Center or download a Change of Address Form
. Instructions for completing this form are provided in our Forms and Files section. To save time, you can also change your address online.
Important: To prevent a lapse in your registration, please complete this form at least seven days before your registration expires.
